Simplifying My Life With Paper and Pen Do you know what happens when technology breaks down? I do - you actually appreciate the basics in life like a pen, pencil, paper, and not having to find a wireless hotspot to start writing! About six months ago at my software company job in Nashua, our IT department initiated an upgrade to our e-mail system, which for some reason provided an opportunity to shut down my ability to synchronize my handy combination PDA/cell phone with my laptop, rendering my smartphone pretty downright ignorant. For a guy who loves technology, I was less than happy with all the great technology coming into our office. I began to imagine how nice the cavemen had it with burnt stick charcoal pencils and the hard canvas of the rock walls upon which to draw. This is where it starts to get better. About two weeks ago, I had had enough with the new mail and calendar system. My work and personal calendar was on my laptop, and at one time had both on my Palm Treo - what a luxury, right? But now with my personal blackout in full-swing, I had no way to integrate my personal and business life in the palm of my hand as I once could. I began to hear that phrase, “simplify your life” as if it were background music in an anxiety medication commercial. Enough was enough - off to Barnes and Noble I headed, and what a blessing it was! You know the feeling when you walk into a library, or a really nice bookstore with the marshmallow chairs and the whiff of dark coffee brewing? It felt like coming home - take me to the paper calendars, and right away! I was in heaven! The leather bindings, heavy weight paper, or the funky-colored covers with a magnetic flap closure. I found my answer - and what a relief! And, finally, here’s the tie into greeting cards, and the affection they command. What impressed and surprised me most about my e-predicament, was my realization for the love of the hand-written word. How did I stray so far from this enjoyment? Ah, but for the next 12 months I get to relive the good old days with my leather-bound Day-Timer™ and stuffing credit card receipts and business cards into hiding places. Honestly, being able to write something down rather than gorilla-typing with my thumbs provides the opportunity and appreciation for the long-lost art and intimacy of a pen and paper. After this experience, I have a new respect and purpose for what we do in the art of greeting cards, and to provide our customers a simple place to write.
