Andrew Thompson - Wildlife Photographer

“Male Hummingbird ”                                                        2006 © Andrew Thompson

The fragile wildlife shared with this land is under many relentless pressures, mostly in the form of incremental habitat loss. So, one of my tasks as a nature photographer, has been to engage people’s interest in local living things through my images. If enough people think something is appealing either for its charm, cuteness, or majestic qualities, they may then be more inclined to do whatever it may take to insure its continued survival.

One of my favorite things to do is to set up one of my portable camouflaged blinds near a remote pond or swamp in early spring. After a day or two when hopefully all the local inhabitants have gotten used to its presence, I’ll quietly slip into it with camera gear and wait for all the drama to unfold. It may be a beaver foraging for succulent saplings, or wood ducks chasing wood frogs, or a cow moose gently wading out with a young calf in tow, but sitting quietly and just observing it all as if I were invisible, totally captivates me every time. Another way that I like to experience the wild is to wander off the hiking trails here in the Sandwich Range (in the lakes region of New Hampshire) and bushwhack through the woods. Every step feels like a new discovery---kind of like Louis and Clark on a much smaller scale! I may come across a flock of wild turkeys, an occasional White-tailed Deer, or a Coyote. Last spring, I was finally lucky enough to have stumbled upon a beautiful and most impressive moose antler that had been discarded the previous winter. I may not take a single photograph, but it seems like I am always rewarded with the excitement of anticipation and discovery in one form or another. And every once in a while, the subject, the light, the location, will all combine and result in a photograph that leaves the natural world to be glimpsed in a revealing and most satisfying way.
